Or the same icon to the left of the patient’s name on the Patient Banner

2

If the allergies have not been reviewed before placing an order, a prompt will appear on the screen

See separate quick reference guides for adding and reviewing allergies

3

The ‘Order Entry Worksheet’ is displayed. This is the starting point of creating your order

The ‘Requested By’ options will default to ‘Me’ but can be changed if required

4

Ensure the drop down box shows ‘Start of Browse’ to display the catalogues

5

Click the ‘+’ icon to open the Order Sets catalogue then click on the ‘+’ icon to open the Order Set folder you require

The relevant Order Sets will be displayed in the centre of the screen.

Select the required ‘Order Set’ and then click the ‘Add’ button on the right side of the screen. The contents of the Order Set will display (this may be just Pathology tests, just Radiology imaging or a combination) and the Order Form.

7

The following example contains both Pathology tests and Radiology investigations

8

Use the tick boxes to ‘select or deselect tests’, if not all tests from the order set are required

9

Every order set that includes Pathology tests will have the same standard set of questions

10

Every order set that includes Radiology investigations will have the same standard set of questions

11

When completing the order form, make sure you complete all the relevant fields, especially those containing a red box, as these are mandatory fields

12

The ‘blue grid’ icon is displayed when any of the tests or examinations require additional information

Click on the ‘blue grid’ icon or the ‘test name’ to open the individual test order form, where the additional fields can be completed. Any information added in the order set order form will be displayed automatically

Once completed, click ‘OK’ to return to the Order Set order form.

14

Note - If you don’t click on the ‘blue grid’ icon and just complete the standard questions on the Order Set order form then click ‘OK’, the orders processing screen will auto-populate and a warning will appear

Select the entries one at a time and click the ‘Edit’ button at the bottom of the screen to display the order form. Complete the additional information required for the selected test

If multiple tests are listed, each will need to be edited individually.

Click ‘OK’ when the forms have been completed for all tests listed

  • For Biochemistry, Haematology and Microbiology orders, the request is sent electronically to Telepath when the sample is collected.
  • For Haematology and Biochemistry – no order form is required. The labels will print when the sample is collected.
    • In the event of a Trust-wide issue with the specimen label printers, IT will activate the fall back forms. This means that, for Inpatients only, the requesting clinician is to click Add Specimen to automatically print order forms for Biochemistry and Haematology tests. The order form can then be placed in the tray for the Phlebotomists to collect the samples
    • The order form for Add-On tests will print in the Lab automatically. No specimens need to be collected
  • Microbiology and Cell Path Non-Gynae Cytology – the order form is printed when the order is placed on the ward but for outpatients it prints when the sample is collected. The specimen label is always printed when the sample is collected
  • Cell Path Histology – the whole process will remain on paper – order forms, labels and results
  • Blood Transfusion - Cross Match and Group & Save and other tests – the order form is printed when the order is placed on the ward but for outpatients it prints when the sample is collected. Specimen labels will remain handwritten. The report will come back into Sunrise as an unsolicited result
  • Blood Product Issue – no sample needed, the order form prints in the Lab, always ring the Lab for this to be actioned. The report will come back into Sunrise as an unsolicited result
  • If specimens are not collected within 12 months of the due date, the order will automatically be closed

19

Outpatient processes:

  • When an order is placed in Outpatients, or on the ward where the patient will be returning as an outpatient for the specimen collection, the patient will be given a card with the required option ticked
  • Outpatient ‘collect at home samples’ – the nurse will click Add Specimen on Sunrise to print the order form and specimen label, which will then be attached to the container and given to the patient. The patient will write the date and time of collection on the order form

20

Note – You can add your most frequent or favourite order sets within the Order Entry Worksheet.  This is ONLY available for Order Sets.

Once you have selected the Order Set you require, click onto the ‘Add to Favourites’ button to the right-hand side of the screen.

You can then find your favourite order sets in the ‘My Favourite Sets’ catalogue from the dropdown box
