This guide is for all users to show the Point of Care Tests workflow on Sunrise

Step

Tips/Notes

Whether the patient is in the Emergency Department or on an Inpatient Ward, the workflow is the same.

Point of Care Tests can be requested by Doctors or Nurses via the Order Entry Worksheet screen

1

From the Ward Tracking Board, with the patient selected and displayed in the Patient Banner, select the ‘Enter Order’ icon from the main toolbar

2

If the allergies have not been reviewed before placing an order, a prompt will appear on the screen

Check the allergy status for the patient. Add any allergies not displayed and mark all allergies as reviewed to continue (see separate Quick Reference Guides for Adding and Reviewing Allergies)

3

The Order Entry Worksheet is displayed. This is the starting point of creating your order. The ‘Requested By’ options will default to ‘Me’

4

In the search field box on the right-hand side, type in ‘%POCT’

Note: The dropdown showing ‘Start of Browse’ will show the catalogue folders, whereas ‘Manual Entry’ will not

Tip - typing the wildcard ‘%’ at the beginning will search for the word in any position in the test name. Not using the wildcard will only return results where the word is at the beginning of the test name, or there are no other words following the searched for word.

5

The list of POCT’s available, will populate in the box underneath. Highlight the test you require and click on the ‘Add’ button on the right hand-side of the screen

6

There is no order form to complete, it will add directly to the bottom of the Order Entry Worksheet.

Repeat the process to request as many Point of Care Tests required at this point.

7

Once all the Point of Care Tests have been requested, click on the ‘Submit Order(s)’ button at the bottom of the Order Entry Worksheet

8

On the Ward Tracking Board under the POCT column, the POC icon will appear with how many have been completed to how many tests have been requested (0:1)

9

To see the POCT orders requested, click on the ‘Orders’ tab and the POCT orders will be listed under the Nursing section. Check in the Status column to see if the test is Active or Complete

Note – For a quick look at the tests ordered, from the Ward Tracking Board, hover over the POC icon for the patient

10

Once the Nursing staff have performed the test and have the results, click on the ‘Flowsheets’ tab

11

From the Options Panel on the left-hand side of the screen, under the Flowsheet Selection area, select ‘FS Clinical Observations Adult’

12

With the Clinical Observations Flowsheet displayed in the main screen, either close the NEWS2 parameter or scroll down the Flowsheet and click on the ‘+’icon to open the ‘Point of Care Tests’ parameter

This is where you record your results. Add a single time column, insert the data required and click Save.

Please refer to the ‘Flowsheet – Key Points’ quick reference guide to manage flowsheet data

13

Note – The recording of the results for Capillary Blood Glucose, Blood Gases and Urine Ketones will remain on paper

14

Once the results have been recorded, it is really important that the Nursing staff complete the order request.

Click onto the ‘Orders’ tab and select the test required

Note – in the Status column, the order is still ‘Active’

15

Anywhere along the blue highlighted order, right click and from the menu options, select ‘Complete’. Repeat the process for each POCT resulted.

Note – in the Status column, the order now shows as ‘Completed’ with the stop date and time.

16

Return to the Ward Tracking Board and the POC icon will have been replaced with a green tick and the ratio 1:1 showing (1 has been completed to 1 has been requested)

17

Note - If more than one Point of Care Test has been requested the ratio will change to what has been completed to what has been requested, for example 1:2 and the POC icon will remain on the Tracking Board until all orders have been completed.

18

POCT orders can be cancelled if required. Please see separate quick reference guide on ‘Modify Orders – Discontinue, Cancel and Reorder’
